Thunderbird production ended in 1997, then briefly resumed as a two-passenger, marketed from 2002 to 2005.įrom its introduction in 1955 to its final phaseout in 2005, Ford produced over 4.4 million Thunderbirds. Sales were good until the 1990s when large two-door coupes became unpopular. Succeeding generations became larger until the line was downsized in 1977, again in 1980, and once again in 1983. For 1958, the Thunderbird was redesigned with a second row of seats.

Ford positioned the Thunderbird as an upscale model and it is credited in developing a new market segment, the personal luxury car. Unlike the Chevrolet Corvette, it was not marketed as a sports car. The Thunderbird entered production for the 1955 model year as a sporty two-seat convertible. Introduced as a two-seat convertible, the Thunderbird was offered variously as a four-seat hardtop coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat convertible and hardtop, four-door pillared hardtop sedan, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and five-passenger pillared coupe, with the final generation designed again as a two-seat convertible.įord targeted the two-seat Thunderbird as an upscale model, but the 1958 model year design introduced a rear seat and arguably marked the expansion of a market segment eventually known as personal luxury cars, positioned to emphasize comfort and convenience over handling and high-speed performance. The Ford Thunderbird (colloquially called the T-Bird) is a personal luxury car manufactured and marketed by Ford from model years 1955-2005 (with a 1997-2002 hiatus), across 11 generations.

They're just fiddling now with things people don't really need. Corey Lewis Those quad shut lines on the tailgate are going to look crap in light colors.I mean why tell someone on here your life and real world experience when someone would want to argue with you or tell you that you are stupid. Of course our two useful idiots have told how they would do things.I really think that our commenters who have worked in automotive manufacturing haven't commented due to the sheer volume of disrespectful comments they know they'd receive. These contracts may be a sea change for both sides. We haven't heard from our commenters who have worked in vehicle plants. El scotto For years, even decades the Big 3 gave the unions pretty much what ever they wanted.George Moy They got rid of the truck too,so what is it Ford to not have a car or truck to buy?GM is doing the same thing no car, and next no truck, but I wonder if anyone out there realizes with trucks they sit up higher, you will have more rollover accidents than you would have with a car, so I hope you weigh out the safety issues before signing on the dotted line. What did they do to it now, the fools?Second impression? Why? I was never interested in any stupid pickup anyway. Tassos First impression, what the hell did they do to the grille? All prior versions of the F150 were fine, styling wise.

Why is the EV still not available with AWD? It was a notable omission on the Niro, but on this even more SUV-y Kona it makes even less sense.Yes, I know that FWD with snow tires>AWD with all seasons, but most people don't know or care. It might be entitled the stupid things that you do when your young and have more money than brains. Traded a 76 Corvette for it and then traded the T-Bird to get a customized disco style van (another story for later). Each morning when you went to start it one or both of the hideaway headlight flaps would be raised (think that they ran on a vacuum system). Bad starter and bad alternator right out of the factory. Unfortunately the darn thing was a true lemon.
#1979 THUNDERBIRD INTERIOR SERIES#
In its day I would say it was comparable to how a 5 Series BMW is viewed today as far as status/prestige and the type of person who would buy one. T-Birds still had a lot of carry over prestige at the time. It was an aspirational car, considered a 'personal luxury vehicle', combining all the available creature comforts with a big V-8. Personally back then I loved the look, as did my peers. Even the floor mats had white thunderbirds embossed on them. Silver/grey exterior and matching interior with split bench seats. 351 engine, velour interior and most of the available options.
